Penile Disorders

Penile disorders can affect urination, but they can also cause infertility issues in men. Finding the right treatment for penile disorders depends on the condition a person is experiencing. The following are some common types of penile disorders, as well as the medications used to treat them:

Erectile Dysfunction

Also known as impotence, erectile dysfunction can stop a man from achieving an erection or make it difficult to maintain an erection. While psychological issues can play a role in this process, physical issues can also be a factor. Medications, such as Viagra, are often used to treat erectile dysfunction. These medications increase blood flow to the penis by increasing the effects of nitric oxide, a chemical that causes penile muscles to relax.

Priapism

Priapism is a condition where the penis remains erect for four hours or longer. Ischemic priapism is considered a medical emergency, as failure to receive timely treatment can result in permanent damage, as well as infertility. Ischemic priapism can be treated with a phenylephrine injection, which is a medication that temporarily stops blood from flowing into the penis. As a result, blood can flow out of the penis to decrease the erection.

Penile Cancer

Penile cancer can develop on different areas of the penis, such as the foreskin or head. Like other types of cancer, this condition can be treated with chemotherapy, particularly with larger growths or when the cancer has spread to different areas.

Balanitis

Balanitis is described as inflammation of the head of the penis, which can lead to pain and discomfort. This condition most often affects people who are uncircumcised. Balanitis can result from fungal infections, or it may result from a sexually transmitted disease. With these causes, doctors may prescribe anti-fungal medications or antibiotics.
