Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV)

While the effects are similar to those caused by the common cold, human metapneumovirus (hMPV) can cause worsening symptoms in some people. Obtaining the proper treatment can limit bothersome symptoms and prevent more serious health issues from occurring.

Causes and Symptoms of hMPV

hMPV infections result from a virus, which is often spread through contact with an infected person. The virus can also be transmitted by handling contaminated objects. Symptoms include:

  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath

Young children, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems have a higher risk of experiencing more serious symptoms. hMPV can also cause complications like pneumonia and bronchitis.

How This Condition Is Treated

Home remedies and bed rest are the most common treatments for mild hMPV. In this case, non-prescription medications to control coughs and reduce congestion are often effective. People can also take over-the-counter pain relievers and fever reducers to manage symptoms until they subside.

When the effects of hMPV are more severe, doctors may prescribe medications. This includes steroids to reduce swelling. While antibiotics can’t treat viruses, these medications may be prescribed if a person experiences a bacterial infection alongside hMPV.

Severe bouts of hMPV may require hospitalization. In this case, oxygen may be provided via a mask or tube to help with breathing. To ensure proper hydration, doctors can also provide intravenous fluids.
