Why do people use
alternative medicine?

Even though conventional medicine may well be the first call for most individuals when seeking treatment for health conditions, the use of alternative medicine is still on the rise in many countries.

Alternative medicine is sometimes referred to as natural medicine because it encompasses natural drug-free remedies mostly obtained from plants such as herbs, spices, and even flowers.

Other therapies such as acupuncture and chiropractic care are also considered to be alternative forms of medicine. So, what exactly is it about alternative medicine that attracts so many individuals away from conventional medical practices?

Holistic approach

It is thought that conventional medicine often offers patients a quick fix that treats the symptoms but not the root causes of many health issues. Alternative medicine practices differ from this because they often try to treat the whole person and the cause of illness, resulting in the eventual easing of symptoms.

If the cause of an illness is thought to be due to mental stress, it can express itself with digestive issues. Treating and easing mental health issues can help ease digestive complaints and disorders, as emotions are linked to the functioning of the digestive system.

This is known as a holistic approach to health and is preferred by many as the alternative to treating only the symptoms that are present.

Another example of a holistic approach to patient care can be to boost the immune systems of individuals who are highly susceptible to infections that cause coughs and sore throats. This could prevent repeat infections from occurring.

Herbs, homeopathy, or any other forms of natural medicine can be used to achieve this, whilst conventional medicine would only focus on treating the actual symptoms with antibiotics and cough medicines without delving deeply into the possible causes of a patient’s reoccurring infections.

Fewer side effects

While alternative medicine is not free of side effects, most remedies are well tolerated by patients, and any side effects that are present are usually mild. This makes it more likely that patients will continue and complete the course of any treatments prescribed.

Conventional medication, on the other hand, can cause numerous side effects, leading to patient non-compliance when it comes to taking certain medications, and this can result in incomplete medical treatments.

The personal touch

Alternative medicine practitioners spend more time with their patients and delve deeply into their medical history. These practitioners take the time to get to know their patients and understand their unique needs and health concerns. This personal approach to treatment can make individuals feel more valued and heard, leading to better outcomes and overall satisfaction with their care.

Preventative care

Alternative medicine offers a preventative approach to health. No illness needs to be present to see an alternative medicine practitioner. If an individual wants dietary advice or wants to maintain their level of health to prevent age-related diseases and conditions from developing, then alternative medicine can aid this approach.

Medical empowerment

Alternative medicine empowers individuals to take care of their health by offering various treatments and preventative therapies. Regular massage therapy, for instance, can help prevent stress and painful joints and muscles, while chiropractic care can help keep joints flexible and supple.

Herbal treatments can help prevent infections and aid organ function. Patients can also choose to mix and match treatments to obtain the maximum benefit from what alternative medicine has to offer.

However, conventional medicine tends to have a set treatment option or different drugs that a patient is limited to trying. If there is no positive outcome, then patients can often have limited further treatment options available.

Such outcomes are what often lead patients to alternative medicine as they try to seek a solution to their health problems. This is why alternative medicine has become so popular because it gives patients the power to try more treatments with the hope that alternative medicine can help where conventional medicine has failed.
