Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

With gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acids from the stomach move back through the oesophagus, which causes symptoms like heartburn, abdominal pain, swallowing issues, and other health effects.

GERD is not usually associated with serious symptoms, but the condition can be quite uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are lots of effective treatments available that can combat symptoms of GERD.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Doctors usually recommend that patients try non-prescription medications first when treating GERD. Antacids are a common over the counter treatment, as these medicines contain alkali chemicals that help counteract stomach acids. There are also medications that decrease how much stomach acid is produced, and some can even remedy oesophageal irritation at the same time.

Prescription Medications

In the event that over-the-counter treatments are ineffective, prescription medications are the next step. These medications also work to reduce how much stomach acid is produced, only in prescription-strength form. There’s a risk of minor side effects with prescription GERD medications, but most people are able to take them without major issues.

Home Remedies

In addition to medications, people with GERD can also experience relief by doing the following:

  • Avoid foods that cause acid reflux flares, such as chocolate and alcohol
  • Elevate your head when sleeping
  • Quit smoking (or do not start)
  • Do not lie down for at least three hours after eating
  • Try to maintain a reasonable weight
  • Eat meals slowly, fully chewing each bite before swallowing

While GERD is associated with lots of bothersome effects, most people with the condition can find relief through medication and lifestyle changes.
