Arthritis & Other Joint
Problems

Joint issues like arthritis and other health conditions can cause pain and negatively affect bodily function. Joint problems may result from immune dysfunction, injuries, or repeated movements over a period of years. Here’s what people must know about these conditions to mitigate their bothersome effects.

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis causes swelling in joints throughout the body. The condition often manifests in one of two ways:

Osteoarthritis

This form of arthritis results from ongoing wear of the joints. As cartilage (which cushions bones) breaks down, bones make contact and grind against each other. This process also affects the lining of the joints, which will become swollen over time.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks a specific area of the joints. Along with inflammation, both the cartilage and bone can experience permanent damage. With arthritis, one or more joints can experience the following symptoms:

  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Stiffness

As the condition advances, people can find movement more challenging. In some cases, mobility may be significantly limited.

Other Types of Joints Issues

Along with arthritis, people may also experience the following joint conditions:

  • Bursitis – Repetitive movement can lead to bursitis, which is characterized by inflammation around the joints.
  • Tendinitis – Tendinitis also results from repetitive movements and causes inflammation of connective tissues known as tendons.
  • Gout – Often affecting the joints within the big toe, gout results from excess uric acid, which causes pain and inflammation.
  • Injuries – Sprains and bone fractures may also lead to joint dysfunction and discomfort.

Certain infections, including viruses, can also contribute to joint pain and dysfunction.

Treatment and Management of Joint Conditions

With arthritis, treatment usually depends on the severity of symptoms. Some people use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids to manage swelling and pain. Medications may also be applied topically. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be recommended. In this case, it’s possible to repair and replace joints to improve function.

Arthritis and other types of joint issues can also be treated using physical therapy, which involves targeted exercises and stretching routines to enhance function of the joints. Doctors may also encourage patients to rest their affected joints if overuse is an issue. Learning how to perform repetitive actions differently can help prevent future joint problems.
