Headaches

Most people experience headaches from time to time. With chronic daily headaches, mild to severe head pain may occur several times a week. Along with the pain and discomfort this condition causes, people who experience headaches on a regular basis can also suffer from major mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety.

Causes and Symptoms

Some people experience chronic daily headaches for no discernible reason, which is known as primary chronic daily headaches. Others may experience head pain due to an underlying medical issue, such as:

  • Brain trauma
  • Tumours
  • Inflammation
  • Infection
  • Pain medication overuse

To be diagnosed with chronic daily headaches, a person must experience head pain for 15 or more days per month, and the issue must persist for longer than three months.

Treatment and Management

When it comes to primary chronic daily headaches, doctors may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

  • Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) – Prescription NSAIDs are typically more powerful than over the counter medication and may benefit people with chronic daily headaches as a result.
  • Antidepressants – Certain types of antidepressant medication is effective for reducing headaches, as well as treating the mental health issues that can accompany them.
  • Beta Blockers – People with episodic migraines may be prescribed beta blockers, which is a type of high blood pressure medication.
  • Anti-Seizure Drugs – Anti-seizure medication may also benefit chronic headache sufferers.

It’s important to take all medication according to your doctor’s instructions. Also, report any side effects or adverse reactions immediately, as it may be necessary to change your dose or switch medications.

Can Chronic Headaches Be Prevented?

Avoiding triggering events like stress and certain types of food can reduce the frequency of headaches. Leading a healthy lifestyle that involves regular exercise and a nutritious diet is also beneficial. Your doctor can offer tips on how to change your lifestyle for the better, as well as determine what triggers are most likely to cause your discomfort.
