Trachoma

Trachoma is an infection of the eyes that is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. Symptoms of trachoma typically affect both eyes and can include:

  • Redness
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Inflammation
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Discharge
  • Itching of the eyes and eyelids

Trachoma can lead to blindness without proper treatment. Fortunately, the outcomes are often good when the condition is caught and treated early.

Antibiotics Are an Effective Treatment for Trachoma

People with symptoms related to trachoma are urged to visit a doctor as soon as possible, as early treatment with antibiotics is crucial. In many cases, antibiotics like tetracycline and azithromycin are sufficient in curing an infection when administered while the condition is in its beginning stages.

Tetracycline is an ointment that is applied to the eyes, while azithromycin is taken orally. These treatments can also be used as a preventative measure when trachoma infections are rampant among children in a community (as these bacterial infections are highly contagious and can spread easily).

Is It Possible to Avoid Trachoma Infections?

Trachoma can be avoided when you take the following steps:

  • Wash hands and face on a regular basis
  • Make sure that waste products are properly discarded to deter flies (which can be a carrier of the bacteria that causes trachoma)
  • Be mindful of water sanitation when it comes to drinking sources

In the event you live in a household where one person has trachoma, it is important for the rest of the household to get tested. This can ensure timely treatment and prevent re-infection.
