Does Angina Ever Go Away?

Associated with symptoms like chest pain and a feeling of fullness, angina results from a lack of blood flow to the heart. Problems with blood flow often occur due to narrowing arteries, which can greatly increase a person’s heart attack risk. While angina will not resolve on its own, some people may be able to manage the condition by making significant changes to their health and wellness.

Upon being diagnosed with angina, your doctor will likely recommend the following lifestyle changes: 

  • Reducing Physical Activity – Some people with angina may need to restrict physical activity. However, doctors may also recommend monitored exercise to improve heart health.  
  • Avoiding Risk Factors – Smoking, being overweight or obese, and certain medical issues (such as high blood pressure) can increase the chance of heart problems. Accordingly, these risk factors must be avoided.  
  • Decreasing Stress – Stress can also contribute to angina. If stress is a constant concern in your life, consider seeking the assistance of a therapist or counsellor.  
  • Eating a Healthy Diet – A heart healthy diet can combat certain risk factors associated with angina, including high cholesterol levels.  

While the above changes can have a positive impact on your heart health, many people with angina will require some form of medical assistance.  

Medical Treatment May Be Necessary for Many Individuals 

Doctors frequently prescribe medication, such as nitrates, beta blockers, and ACE inhibitors, to manage the effects of angina. When symptoms are more severe, surgery may also be recommended. Your physician can help you develop a solid treatment plan to maintain health and wellness.
