The Role of Hygiene in Preventing
Viral Gut Infections Like Norovirus

While norovirus, a viral illness that causes symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, only lasts a few days, its effects can be quite unpleasant. Additionally, serious complications like dehydration can cause more severe health effects.

You cannot always avoid viral infections, but hygiene greatly lowers your chance of experiencing norovirus and other illnesses. Here are a few smart strategies to try.

Wash Your Hands Regularly

You encounter germs everywhere all day long, so frequent handwashing can help you avoid all sorts of infections, including norovirus. Always wash your hands after using the restroom and before eating and be sure to use running water and soap when doing so. To fully eliminate germs, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds before rinsing and drying thoroughly.

Clean, Sanitize, and Disinfect Your Household

Viruses can cling to surfaces and objects throughout your home, in which case the right cleaning techniques are crucial. A three-step process involving the following is best:

  • Cleaning – Cleaning involves the physical removal of dirt, debris, and germs using soap and water.
  • Sanitizing – Sanitizing with special cleaning solutions, such as diluted bleach, decreases the number of germs on a surface.
  • Disinfecting – Disinfectants are capable of not just removing germs but killing them. These solutions tend to be stronger and should be used with caution to avoid skin and eye irritation.

All three cleaning steps should be performed regularly, but you may want to disinfect your home more often if a member of your household is ill with norovirus or some other contagious illness.

Make Food Safety a Priority

Norovirus can pass from person to person, or it can be acquired by touching a contaminated surface or object. You can also contract the virus by eating contaminated food and drink, but proper safety practices help lower your risk of foodborne illness. In addition to fully cooking all meat, fish, and shellfish, you are encouraged to rinse fruit and vegetables to eliminate any contaminants on the surface.
