Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2)

Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) is the leading cause of genital herpes. However, the virus can also cause oral blisters, often known as cold sores.

In addition to the uncomfortable symptoms associated with HSV-2, the condition can also be easily spread to others via sexual contact. As a result, it is important for those afflicted to find an effective treatment, which is where antiviral medications come in.

Chronic Suppressive Therapy Is Often Recommended for HSV-2

People with HSV-2 may need to take antiviral medications regularly to reduce their symptoms. This is known as chronic suppressive therapy, and it usually entails taking medication on a daily basis even when you are not experiencing an outbreak. Chronic suppressive treatment can substantially decrease how many outbreaks a person has, as well as affect the severity of symptoms.

Also, chronic suppressive therapy can protect others from acquiring HSV-2. Daily antivirals decrease how much of the virus is shed when a person is asymptomatic, which means there is a lower chance of a sexual partner contracting the virus.

Avoiding Triggers May Also Help Reduce HSV-2 Outbreaks

In addition to taking antiviral medication as recommended by your doctor, it may also be possible to lessen outbreaks by being aware of – and avoiding – common HSV-2 triggers. These include:

  • Stress
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Oral trauma
  • Respiratory infections

Things like relaxation techniques, sun protection, and caution when it comes to bodily health can also impact a person’s symptoms. Some triggers, such as hormonal fluctuations and immune system suppression, cannot always be avoided.

If you feel that your antiviral regimen is not having the desired results, be sure to tell your doctor. You may need to adjust your dosage or switch to another type of medication.
