Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

People over the age of 50 have the highest risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This ocular disorder can lead to loss of vision, but certain treatments can reduce disease progression and stop new symptoms from developing.

Supplements and Medication Can Stop the Progression of AMD

Macular degeneration cannot be cured, but diagnosing the condition early can slow the progression of more serious vision issues. In the early stages, doctors may recommend a combination of supplements and medication to treat this eye disorder.

With dry AMD, which causes gradual changes in your vision due to the accumulation of proteins and fats beneath the macula (the part of the retina positioned at the rear of the eye), the following vitamins and minerals can help:

  • Zinc
  • Vitamin C
  • Copper
  • Vitamin E

As for wet AMD, which is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels and often progresses quickly, intravitreal injections can improve vision quality. Injected medications include:

  • Aflibercept
  • Faricimab-svoa
  • Bevacizumab

These injections work by stopping a certain protein that is key in the production of blood vessels. Initially, injections will be administered every four to six weeks. Once the initial treatment stage is completed, shots will be administered once every 12 weeks.

What Is the Outlook for AMD With Treatment?

While macular degeneration can result in vision loss, many people with the condition are able to preserve their vision. Along with supplements and medication, other treatments can also prevent AMD from causing permanent vision loss.

Photodynamic therapy, which can be used in conjunction with intravitreal injections, eliminates excess blood vessels in the eye. If the blood vessels are leaking and causing fluid accumulation in the eyes, laser photocoagulation is another option.
