How to Avoid
Getting Bacterial Meningitis

Bacterial meningitis can have a significant impact on your health. In some cases, the condition can even be life-threatening. Understanding how infections happen, and what you can do to avoid them, is key to keeping yourself and your family safe.

Causes and Symptoms of Bacterial Meningitis

Exposure to certain types of bacteria, such as E. coli and Streptococcus pneumoniae, can cause meningitis. It’s also possible to acquire the illness after being exposed to someone who’s currently infected. Symptoms of bacterial meningitis tend to present quickly and often include:

  • Neck stiffness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Light sensitivity
  • Confusion

Children will also exhibit symptoms like lethargy, lack of appetite, and extreme fatigue.

How to Avoid Bacterial Infections

It may be possible to avoid the bacteria associated with meningitis by adopting the following healthy habits:

  • Avoid Sharing Certain Items With Others – Bacteria can be passed from one person to another when sharing straws, utensils, cosmetic products, and other items. Never share personal items and refrain from using other people’s items to avoid illness.
  • Keep Your Hands Clean – Hand washing should occur after using the restroom and before eating. For the best results, wash hands under running water and use soap. If no soap is available, hand sanitizer is a good alternative.
  • Lead a Healthy Lifestyle – Your immune system will function more effectively when you’re healthy. As a result, you should consume nutritious foods, exercise regularly, and get a good night’s sleep.

You can also look into vaccinations for some types of bacterial meningitis. Talk to your doctor about possible immunizations and whether they’re right for you and your loved ones.
