Sexual Health Disorders

Several conditions can cause you to feel unsatisfied with sex. These issues are common, although many people prefer to not talk about their own experiences in this area. More than 40% of women and nearly one-third of men may have problems with their sexual health.

Sexual health problems, also referred to as sexual dysfunction, can have many causes and require different treatments. Your doctor can help you learn more about any sexual issues you face and suggest therapies to improve your sexual well-being.

Symptoms

Sexual health disorders may lead to:

  • Pain during sex
  • Disinterest in sex, also known as low libido or low sex drive
  • Difficulty becoming aroused during sexual activity
  • Trouble reaching or maintaining an erection
  • An inability to ejaculate or have an orgasm
  • A tendency to ejaculate too soon
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Difficulty relaxing the vagina enough to make sex possible

Some of the same symptoms can be caused by different conditions. Additionally, people with the same sexual health disorder don’t always experience identical symptoms. This can make it hard to understand what is wrong. However, your doctor can help you get to the root of any sexual dysfunction.

Causes

Sexual dysfunction is sometimes caused by other health issues, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Abnormal levels of certain hormones
  • Nerve damage or other neurological disorders
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver failure
  • Prostate cancer
  • High stress levels
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Other mental health factors such as trauma, fear, feelings of negativity about a relationship, or attitudes about sex

Drinking alcohol and using recreational drugs can sometimes impact sexual health. This can especially be true if you are dependent on these substances and have a hard time going without them.

Certain medications can also cause sexual health disorders, including allergy drugs (antihistamines), medications that treat a stuffy nose (decongestants), antidepressants, hormone medications, and drugs that treat high blood pressure. If you experience sexual dysfunction after changing medications or dosages, talk to your doctor about whether you may be experiencing a medication side effect.

Diagnosis

Although it can be an uncomfortable conversation, it’s a good idea to discuss any changes in sexual health with your doctor. A basic physical exam can sometimes uncover potential health problems that are causing your symptoms. Your doctor may also recommend other tests to diagnose other health issues that commonly cause sexual dysfunction.

Sexual health disorders are also very commonly caused by mental health issues. A mental health professional such as a psychiatrist, therapist, or counsellor may be able to identify the cause of your symptoms.

Treatment

Sexual dysfunction treatments involve first addressing any underlying mental or physical health concerns. This may include treating another disorder or switching your medication plan.

In other cases, further treatment may be required. There are many types of treatment options, including:

  • Medication to improve sexual function
  • Devices such as implants or vacuum devices to help with erectile dysfunction
  • Hormone treatments to correct any imbalances that may be leading to sexual dysfunction
  • Talk therapy to address any beliefs, feelings, or habits that may be getting in the way of having satisfying sex
  • Sex therapy to work out physical or mental issues coming between you and your partner

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also boost your sexual health. Eat a balanced diet, stay active, and drink less alcohol.

In many cases, sexual health disorders can be successfully treated. However, your outlook will be best if you work with your doctor to address any issues.
